The home workshops -Split hazel ‘whisket’ basket workshop (2 day)

I will be teaching a two day split hazel basket making course at my home workshop in Dundry, south Bristol.

There is a long history of hazel basket making in England and in parts of Europe, however it is now classified as an “endangered craft”.

Over the two days we will be making a split hazel ‘whisket’, an agricultural frame basket traditional to the welsh borders.

During the course you will learn some traditional basketry techniques and make a lovely useful and beautiful basket out of local material, full of history and heritage.

Day 1 - We’ll be learning all about hazel, the type of rod that is best to use, and learning how to process our hazel rods, splitting them to create our weaving material.

Day 2 - We will be making our hoops for the rim of our baskets, and get weaving!

Suitable for beginners, we will be using some hand tools, such as knives and saws.

Tea and coffee and lunch included, please wear suitable clothes for outdoor works, waterproofs and warm clothing including gloves as we will be working outside for Day 1.

Location - Oxleaze Lane, Dundry, Bristol, BS41 8JZ. You will receive the exact location and arrival instructions upon booking.

Testimonial

“I felt at ease right away with Flo. There was a lightness and down-to-earth-ness that really set the tone for the weekend, which I really appreciated. Flo is patient and good-humoured, not to mention extremely skilled, all of which meant for a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying weaving experience.”
